Benji's Bike Page

I lead bicycle rides for the Boston chapter of the AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club). Here are the Bicycle Committee's Home Page and their Ride Calendar.

Bike Routes

Most of the rides I lead start and end at the Weston town hall, for the Friday morning ride series. I often plan rides using the Gmaps Pedometer. For examples, see any of the maps below. I use the spreadsheet component of Open Office to generate my cue sheets. In the table below, I give links to the spreadsheet and also to HTML versions of the cue sheets.

Miles Cue Sheet Map Comments
16.25 ods HTML compass rose nice hill (Highland St, Weston); great scenery (Rice Rd, Wayland); short stretches on busy roads (Oak St, Natick and Rt 126, Wayland).
27.7 ods HTML compass rose This starts and ends the same as the 16.25-mile route above, but it adds a detour through Wellesley, Needham, Dover, and Natick, crossing Route 9 at Oak St. (with a traffic light).

23.4 ods HTML compass rose This route goes into Wellesley, within a block and a half of my house, then finds a quirky route to Winter Street in Weston. It goes down both Rice Road (Wayland) and Pelham Island Road (Wayland/Sudbury), both of which are long, pretty roads without too much traffic.
32.7 ods HTML compass rose This route starts with a nice climb up Highland St, goes through Wellesley and Needham, and goes up and down the Charles River. Then it goes into Dover and dips in and out of Westwood. After a gratuitous climb up Wilsondale St and down Strawberry Hill St, the route goes back through Needham and Wellesley to the start. There are a couple of short, steep hills a little past the half-way point, noted on the cue sheet.
32.3 ods HTML This is the reverse of the previous route. Because of rain all week, I did not have a chance to test the cue sheet. I did lead the ride, with one other rider, on 10/12/2007, despite the rapidly changing weather. Update: I checked the route on 9/11/2008 and updated the cue sheet.
21.7 ods HTML compass rose This route is a figure-8, starting and ending at the Lincoln elementary schools; the two loops cross nearby, at the 5-point intersection known as Lincoln Center. (New York City artsafficionados may call it "the other Lincoln Center.") The first loop goes up into Concord, crossing Rt. 2 twice. The second loop goes down into Weston, then back up through Lincoln, along the West shore of the Cambridge Reservoir. (A section of Winter St. is one-way, so you cannot reverse this part of the route.)
26.8 ods HTML compass rose I wanted to get from Weston to Sherborn and back and stay closer to 25 miles than 30. The result is that this route takes roads that are a little more heavily used than most of my routes, such as Central Avenue/Centre Street (Needham/Dover) for 3.7 miles. We get across Route 9 using underpasses (Cliff Road and Weston Road, both in Wellesley). The cue sheet is a little less detailed than some of the others: I do not note stop signs, T intersections, etc.
21.9 xls HTML compass rose This is similar to the 23.4-mile route above, but it elimiates the quirky path through Wellesley and adds some twists and turns in Wayland.
28.9 ods HTML compass rose This is similar to the 32.7-mile route above, going into Dover and Westwood, but it is shorter and leaves out two of the four hills. For some reason, the Google map (as of 10/2008, maybe it will change) shows a short detour instead of simply crossing Central St. near the southern end of Weston Rd. in Wellesley. The cue sheet is a little iaccurate, showing a total distance of 29.1 miles.
